Crosby School named for Henry Crosby, Shaw University educator and benefactor of the Crosby School. Garfield School named for James A. Garfield, member of Gov. William Holden's special committee to defend the rights of blacks during reconstruction.
Schools consolidated as Crosby-Garfield school in 1920.
