Use this class to improve your communication with anyone, including teachers, employers, parents, coaches, college staff, health care providers, legal professionals, family, friends, and neighbors.
What you’ll get out of this course: Think of an important or hard conversation that you need to have. As we move through this course, you'll create a plan for that conversation. Take home your strategy guide, which will help you continue to apply your new learning. Your instructor will be Karen Kranbuehl, who has a background in the legal and social work professions and is a frequent advocate and speaker.

How this course will help you:
Think of an important goal you have or a hard conversation you need to have. As you learn, you'll get to apply your new learning right away to develop a strategy and plan for your own communication goal! You'll have a workbook to take home and use for your important conversation.
Topic: Welcome, Introductions, and Purpose (5 minutes)
Build rapport. Collaborate group norms. Set intention for the workshop.
Topic: Self-determination (20 minutes)
What it is and why it’s important.
Self-assess self-determination and learn to grow it.
Topic: Goal setting for more effective communication (15 minutes)
Set a SMART goal for an important conversation in their own life
Break (5 minutes)
Answer any questions that individuals don’t want to ask in front of the group.
Topic: Self-reflection (15 minutes)
About the communication, including history with the subject, person, or place involved.
Identify and plan coping with potentially distracting thoughts and feelings.
Identify strengths and allies.
Topic: Understand your audience (15 minutes)
Identify goals, responsibilities, and feelings that the other person may be experiencing.
Consider the role of trust and accountability.

After a career in law, Karen earned her Masters in Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill. She founded and became CEO of SAY IT Solutions. At SAY IT, Karen develops trainings for building self-advocacy skills and strategies for day-to-day life. Her experience includes working with participants in recovery court and answering crisis lines serving survivors of sexual assault, rape, and intimate partner violence. Karen is in recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges since 1995. Her unique combination of experiences gives her a strong foundation for working with people who seek to develop stronger motivation and more effective communication.
