SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: Millbrook Environmental Connections Magnet Elementary

Children exposed to nature are often filled with wonder and revel in the mystery of a close‐up view of the moon, a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, and the hidden world of the ocean. As it turns out, this curiosity about the outdoors is something to be cultivated. Research shows that learning outdoors increases school performance, supports emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development, and can lead to greater parental and community involvement.

Millbrook Magnet Elementary School is a magnet school with an environmental connection theme. It leverages students' innate interest in nature to instill scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem‐solving skills. It achieves this by including outdoor learning labs called Expeditions and offering Environmental Inquiry courses.

The Expeditions elective courses are offered quarterly, and students attend for thirty minutes daily. Courses vary in topics such as Garden Design, Treasures from the Earth: Rocks and Minerals, PONDering Life, 3, 2, 1 Blast Off!, and more. Students can learn more in‐depth about a topic that interests them or be exposed to one they have not yet learned. One goal is to encourage students to think, work, and communicate like botanists, geologists, chemists, and other environmentally‐themed professionals.

Environmental Inquiry, or E‐Inquiry, is an additional class students attend two days a week. These problem‐based classes focus on having students explore real‐world problems and challenges. The designated E‐Inquiry teachers focus on four broad themes: Living Things, Earth Science & Solar System, Environmental & Community Connections, and Weather & Climate. There are three separate labs at the school that have included presentations by community partners, studies into natural habitats, investigations into reusing and recycling, and more.

Expeditions and Environmental Inquiry are great additions to an educational elementary experience, but the learning doesn't end there. The magnet theme is interwoven into the regular core classes as well. For math, students learn about volume hands‐on by filling garden beds with soil. In their social studies class, students learn about the significance of landmarks and historical figures. This holistic approach to education and learning instills a lifelong appreciation for nature and the world.
